The Mātauranga Māori Files takes readers beyond the headlines to question the narratives they’ve been fed about indigenous knowledge by the mainstream media. It also examines controversies over government funding of Māori knowledge. From the author of No Maori Allowed and We Don’t Serve Maori Here, comes a book that is a trusted source of reliable information on Mātauranga Māori. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the national debate over the place of traditional knowledge in education, health, and public policy.

• What’s driving media bias in the coverage of Mātauranga Māori?
• At nearly 20 percent of the population, how much control should Māori have over traditional knowledge funding?
• Includes several case studies of Māori research projects and how they are treated by journalists and government funding bodies.
• Reveals how mainstream media outlets have navigated the debate around indigenous knowledge and questions their adherence to journalistic standards of balance and accuracy.
• Scrutinises media coverage of claims that Māori ancestors discovered Antarctica before Europeans.
