The Leading Māori Language Programme
Te Whanake is a comprehensive series of Māori-language textbooks for adults and teenagers, from beginner to advanced.
It aims to provide the resources to enable adult and teenage learners to develop the ability to communicate in Māori — to develop the receptive skills of listening and reading comprehension, and to become fluent and literate in te reo Māori.
Including maps, grammar notes, exercises, and working in conjunction with the Te Whanake podcasts, the series has been carefully designed to help student progress in stages, beginning with the language required for common everyday situations and needs, and gradually extending the learner’s language skills through to a higher level with each book.
Te Kākano, the first book in the series, concentrates on the language needed for everyday situations, such as meeting people, having meals, going shopping, making arrangements, telephone conversations and going to a hui. Maps help locate the main tribal areas and the Māori names of important places, regions and mountains.
