Material culture (economy, the arts, technology and aspects of daily life) is the subject of Augustin Krämer's second volume on Samoa. Here he surveys fishing and boat-building techniques, tattooing, weaving, siapo (bark cloth) manufacture, medicinal remedies and cooking, along with a host of other topics related to everyday life in nineteenth century Samoa. Krämer's commentary (now published in Samoan and English) is supplemented by 150 original photographs and 44 line drawings.
