On the Cook Islands and other South Pacific Islands, children collect hermit crabs from the beach at dusk. A number is written on each shell and then next day there is an event in which the crabs are placed in the middle of a circle and onlookers watch to see which one gets to the rope circle first.
There is a moral in the story, the littlest crab is able to outwit the bigger contestants. Lovely illustrations, many in colour depict children and the crabs.
